I just love this. Xoopit, a Firefox-plugin integrated with Facebook Connect has just brought social context into Email. Ever since I became a Facebook user I have been thinking about how cool it would be to bring the social graph into my Email. Email is still the main platform through which people communicate on the Internet and so surfacing social context into email - just made email so much more social,exciting and useful.
Xoopit has obviously integrated Facebook Connect and is plugging into Gmail through Firefox, BUT if you are an ISP or an web-mail provider - you can do this yourself without the need of a plugin or the support from Facebook. I'm really excited to see this innovative integration of Facebook Connect via a plugin into mail, but there is so much more an webmail provider can do by integrating Facebook Connect directly.
I would love to see Facebook Connect integrated into leading local webmail services around the globe and make email more social.

The Israeli elections were just held earlier this week. Inspired by what we at Facebook did with CNN during the inauguration of President Obama, and Nana10 & Israeli TV Channel 10 decided to totally by themselves launch a similar integration. What was impressive, was the fact that they did it all by themselves and manged to even upgrade the integration by allowing people to actually comment on the live reports during the live stream, not just making status updates.
The Nana team told me afterwards that the reactions were so positive that they have decided to luanch similar integrations for the very popular reality show "Survivor" as well.
Kudos, the Nana team for being so innovative and showing the world what you can do with Facebook Connect. I am postive that this will inspire other media companies to follow suit.

Speaking at a Facebook Developer Garage is a fantastic opportunity for us at Facebook to connect with our developer community all over the world. At these Garages we can listen and learn firsthand how we can continue to make Facebook Platform even better, and how together we can continue to make the Web more social.
The timing of the Garage was perfect since Nana10.co.il, one of the leading Israeli portals, just launched their Facebook Connect integration. I was excited to share some details on many of the programs we announced and launched in the last few months including Facebook Connect, winners of our fbFund competition, our Application Verification Program, and our new partnership with Salesforce. We were also thrilled to have leading entrepreneurs Eyal Magen of Gigya and Alon Carmel of Devunity speak about their products and integrations with Facebook and the social Web.
The excitement and the enthusiasm for Facebook Platform was phenomenal, with over 200 developers, entrepreneurs, and local media professionals attending the event.
For me, this was a great opportunity to connect with Israeli developers and to be able to give something back to my homeland and the Israeli Internet community. Israel might be a small country, but Israeli developers and entrepreneurs are everywhere. Rumor has it another Facebook Developer Garage Israel is already in the works. In a in a panel at SIME08 in Stockholm, Sweden that I participated in, I was asked about how Facebook contributes to “change”. Since time was very limited but the interest great and the questions many, I thought I’d share some examples of how Facebook contributes to change in peoples life, in the world at large and in what way Facebook is a “change maker”.
Columbia University history professor David Eisenbach when relating to what impact Facebook had on the US elections, captured the spirit on what is going on very well:
"Far from being an apathetic generation, this generation is just as politically savvy and involved as the 1960s generation," Eisenbach said. "The difference is they're not doing it on the street; they're doing it on the Web."
This is not only true for politics but for all kinds of other issues that people care about at large. All over the world, from Sweden to Columbia, from the South Africa to Israel, people are actively creating events, uploading photos, joining groups, and raising awareness around important issues on Facebook. While many of these social actions previously used to take place on the streets, today these social actions are taking place on the Web and in a much more powerful and distributed way.
Perhaps the most powerful example of this on Facebook is the News Feed. By providing the most relevant content in a social context, e.g. News Feed, Facebook is changing how people share and discover information, and when people discover what people they care about are doing, interested in and engaged in, they too want to get engaged and involved.
The book of Proverbs says: "Like Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.".
We are heavily influenced by our friends, collegues and peers. Facebook provides a unique, never seen before platform for change by helping people discovering information and share important issues with each other in a new and very powerful way.
I feel very proud and privileged to be a part of this great company, a movement that is truly making a difference in people’s life.
Now to the examples:
- The US elections: "Facebook is going to be a generational transformation of American politics and forever it's going to change the way campaigns are run," Columbia University history professor David Eisenbach said. Facebook was used at a very early stage by the Obama campaign in order to organize the young and rally the grass roots. My colleague Randi Zuckerberg captured the spirit of the elections very well in a blog post with great examples on how Facebook made a difference in the US elections.
- Then there is the case of the Dennis Schulman, a blind rabbi and a Democrat who ran for Congress and managed to rasie $250.000 from students and grass root suppporters on Facebook.
- Protests on Facebook against the Columbian revolutionary armed forces (FARC)
- Missing kids found via Facebook:Facebook group for South African Missing Children organization
- Adopted Swedish teenager found her biological mother on Facebook.
- Facebook campaign inspires anti-knife march in London:A march was organised on Facebook in memory of Ben Kinsella, a teenage knife victim.
- Protest against HSBC overdraft charges: Students in the UK protesting HSBC overdraft charges on Facebook. As a result, HSBC changed their policy.
- Cadbury brings back the Wispa: There was an online consumer campaign centered around Facebook to bring back Cadbury’s Wispa (candy bar). Over 93 user-created groups with more than 14,000 members were created to “bring back the Wispa”. Cadbury has decided to bring back the Wispa.
These are just some of many examples..
So go ahead, get engaged, share yourself, create a group, contribute to a cause or raise awareness about an important issue. I am really looking forward to SIME 08 in Stockholm, Sweden next week. I can't believe that it has been five years has passed by since I was there last time. It will a great opportunity to meet up with Scandinavian entrepreneurs and media folks.
Facebook is really hot in Scandinavia and I am looking forward to hear how people use Facebook and what impact it has on people's life in my old back yard.
I recently read an amazing story on how a Swedish teenager from my old home town Lund, who was adopted from Colombia when she was only two month old, found here biological mother in Colombia on Facebook. Talking about making a a difference in people life.

Although I really didn't have time to go Jeff Pulver's Facebook party given my new job, new child and relocation errands, I'm glad that I stepped by. Letting your Facebook friends connect with each other over free drinks is definitely a great idea. Everyone was wearing stickers with their name, company and tagline. Anyway, I made some new acquaintances and had a chance to catch up with some old friends. Kudos to Jeff for inviting me and for the great idea. I wonder if there are any other Facebook networking events like this around the world? (In the picture Jeff, me and Ouriel).

The books message is that we shouldn't be surprised if the next Steve Jobs or Bill Gates will be coming form China. Through an in-depth account of the new generation of Chinese entrepreneurs that is challenging the U.S. for global high-tech leadership, Rebecca is trying to take the reader behind the scenes to provide an up-to-the-minute account of a phenomenon that is just now breaking the surface in mainstream media and business press. I was one of the entrepreneurs interviewed through my involvement in Maxthon as was Jeff Chen, Maxthon's founder.
